University Libraries Newsletter Fall 2019

UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES FALL 2019 NEWSLETTER DEAN’S COMMENTS Recently, the University Libraries joined SPARC (the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition). SPARC is a leading advocate for open access publishing. SPARC reflects the historic commitment of academic libraries acting together, collaborating to serve students, faculty, and the public. Libraries have collaborated to share resources, license journals and other e-resources, and much more. This collaboration is important and will remain so. Hence, I.D. Weeks Library and the Wegner Health Sciences Library are members of numerous state, regional, and national consortiums and collaborative efforts. The University Libraries is able to serve students and faculty because of our long- standing connections, membership, and, at times, leadership in consortiums. Joining SPARC, however, reflects the University Libraries’ increasing participation in national and international efforts to reshape the landscape of scholarly publishing. We are just one organization in the global effort to make scholarship and the sources for scholarship more accessible—open. Single efforts when joined with and informed by the efforts of others are slowly, but perceptibly making a difference. If you are wondering how you—a member of the USD community can advance open access to scholarship, talk to a librarian https://www.usd.edu/library/specialists submit a publication or presentation to RED https://red.library.usd.edu , and discover archives and more in the Digital Public Library of America https://dp.la .
