The South Dakotan
South Dakota ushered in a new era of State/U football in Brookings on
Nov. 17, when 15,278 fans, the seventh-largest crowd in Coughlin-Alumni
Stadium history, attended this long-awaited rivalry. The South Dakota Showdown Series pitted USD
and SDSU against each other on the gridiron for the first time since 2003. Unfortunately for USD fans,
the Jackrabbits downed the Coyotes with a 31–8 score. SDSU has won the last four and 15 of 18
meetings, while USD leads the all-time series, 50–49–6.
1968 Coyote Football Team, Special Achievement
The 1968 South Dakota football team finished 9–1,
becoming just the second team in school history to reach the
nine-win plateau. The Coyotes’ lone loss that season was to
eventual national champion, North Dakota State. Under the
direction of head coach Joe Salem, the team boasted five
All-NCC players and All-American John Kohler. The team
averaged almost 30 points per game while only allowing 17.3.
It was also the first Coyote team to be ranked nationally and
broke several team and individual offensive records. The 1968
team earned wins over UND, SDSU, Drake, UNI, Northern
Colorado and Montana—all current FCS teams.
